Backed by 50 years' practiced government technical industry experience, Mr. Schmitt serves as the director of international programs for the Air Force Research Laboratory Materials and Manufacturing Directorate. During the course of his daily routine, he coordinates and leads the worldwide outreach program sponsored by the laboratory, which works with other organizations in partner countries. Additionally, he fosters those relationships in order to continually develop material technologies for future purposes. A dedicated industry professional, he began in the field with the U.S. Air Force Materials Directorate in the same role. Over the years, he has also worked for the U.S. Air Force Materials Laboratory as an advanced engineering development manager, chief of the plans and programs branch, the assistant chief of the non-metallic materials division, and chief of integration and operations.
Prior to entering the field, Mr. Schmitt earned a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Louisville, and he subsequently returned to college, earning an MBA from Ohio State University. In order to keep abreast of changes in the field, he has become an affiliate and Fellow of the Society for Advancement Materials and Process Engineers, where he has served in a plethora of roles. He has also maintained connections with the American Society for Testing and Materials and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics as an Associate Fellow. Throughout his lengthy career, he has been awarded many times for his work, earning a Lifetime Achievement Award from SAMPE Kushner, numerous international awards through the U.S. Air Force, and the Tech Transfer Award from the Federal Laboratory Consortium. In the near future, Mr. Schmitt intends to continue experiencing success in his field through his role with the Air Force Research Laboratory.
